Travelling to Egypt, Dubai or elsewhere in the Arab world with a peanut or tree nut allergy? This Peanut & Tree Nut Allergy Translation Card – English & Arabic gives you a clear, polite way to explain your allergy to restaurant, café and hotel staff when you can't rely on a shared language.
Which Arabic is this? The card is written in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the formal written Arabic used in books, newspapers, official signs and education across the Arabic-speaking world. Spoken Arabic differs from country to country (Egyptian, Gulf and Moroccan Arabic are quite different from each other), but MSA is the written form that readers in all of these places are taught at school. Because this is a written card that you show, not something you say aloud, MSA is the safest single choice.
Where it should be understood: Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (including Dubai and Abu Dhabi), Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon and Tunisia, and in Morocco, where many people also read French. Staff who work in tourism will often read English, but a card in Arabic helps when kitchen staff, market vendors or smaller restaurants don't.
What the card says: that you have a peanut and tree nut allergy, that even small amounts could cause a severe allergic reaction needing medical attention, and that nut oils, extracts and flours are included. It lists nuts to avoid, asks whether the food contains peanuts or tree nuts, and politely requests clean gloves, utensils, surfaces, cookware and frying oil when your meal is prepared, finishing with a thank you in Arabic.
How to use it: show it before you order, not after. Keep it on your phone, or print and laminate copies for your wallet, day bag and hotel room.
- Instant digital download, English on one side and Modern Standard Arabic on the other
- Credit-card size, works on your phone or printed
- Useful in restaurants, hotels, cafés and markets in Cairo, Dubai, Marrakech and beyond
The card supports communication, but it can't guarantee that a dish or kitchen is safe. Always check ingredients, carry any prescribed medication and follow your healthcare professional's advice.
